Arsenio Rodríguez was a Cuban musician, composer, and bandleader who reshaped Afro-Cuban music. He is a foundational figure in the development of modern salsa.

Origins

Active from around 1940, the blind tres player specialized in son, rumba, and other Afro-Cuban styles, leading influential ensembles.

The sound

He played the tres and tumbadora, and in the 1940s and 1950s established the conjunto format and developed the son montuno—the basic template of modern salsa.

Legacy

A prolific composer of nearly two hundred songs who even claimed to be the true creator of the mambo, Rodríguez is one of the most important figures in Afro-Cuban music.
