Soda Stereo
Soda Stereo was the Argentine trio that defined rock en español and became the best-selling Argentine band of all time. For a generation across Latin America, they were simply the band.
Origins
Formed in Buenos Aires in 1982 by singer-guitarist Gustavo Cerati, bassist Zeta Bosio, and drummer Charly Alberti, they rode the post-dictatorship cultural opening to continental stardom, releasing seven studio albums before disbanding in 1997.
The sound
They started in new wave and post-punk and matured into ambitious, textured art-rock, with Cerati's sophisticated songwriting and image-conscious style setting the template for Spanish-language rock bands that followed.
Legacy
Having sold millions of records, they are the most influential rock en español act of all time, and Cerati's later solo work and untimely death only deepened their mythology. Their songs remain anthems sung by stadiums across the region.
