Spinetta

Luis Alberto Spinetta, nicknamed “El Flaco,” was an Argentine singer, guitarist, composer, and poet widely regarded as one of the founders of Argentine rock. He remains one of the most influential rock musicians his country has produced.

Origins

Born in Buenos Aires, Spinetta launched his career in the late 1960s and went on to lead a series of iconic bands, including Almendra, Pescado Rabioso, Invisible, Spinetta Jade, and Spinetta y Los Socios del Desierto. His work helped give shape to one of the earliest forms of Spanish-language rock.

The sound

His music married rock with a poet's sensibility, marked by literary, introspective lyrics and a restless creative spirit that moved across styles throughout his life.

Legacy

Spinetta's influence on Argentine and Latin American rock is profound; in Argentina, January 23rd — his birthday — is celebrated as “Día Nacional del Músico” in his honor. He died in 2012, leaving a revered catalog.
