Heitor Villa-Lobos

Heitor Villa-Lobos was a Brazilian composer, conductor, cellist and classical guitarist often described as the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music, and one of the most recognizable South American composers in history.

Origens

Active from the early 1900s until his death in 1959, he built an extraordinarily prolific body of work, ultimately writing over 2,000 pieces spanning orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal music.

O som

His music draws on both Brazilian folk traditions and the European classical tradition, heard in works like the Bachianas Brasileiras and the Chôros. His Etudes for classical guitar (1929), dedicated to Andrés Segovia, and his 5 Preludes (1940) are cornerstones of the guitar repertory.

Legado

Villa-Lobos became a global symbol of Brazilian classical music, his fusion of folk and classical idioms shaping how the world hears South American art music.
