La Sonora Ponceña

La Sonora Ponceña is a Puerto Rican salsa institution, founded in 1954 and still active after dozens of albums. For decades it has been led by the acclaimed pianist and arranger Papo Lucca.

Origins

The band was founded in 1954 by Enrique “Quique” Lucca Caraballo in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and later passed to his son Papo Lucca, who became its musical director.

The sound

Their sound is classic salsa with a powerful brass section and Papo Lucca's distinctive piano at its core, anchored over the years by singers such as Tito Gómez.

Legacy

With a recording career stretching across half a century, including a 55th-anniversary album, La Sonora Ponceña ranks among the most enduring and respected bands in salsa.
