La Sonora Ponceña is a Puerto Rican salsa institution, founded in 1954 and still active after dozens of albums. For decades it has been led by the acclaimed pianist and arranger Papo Lucca.
The band was founded in 1954 by Enrique “Quique” Lucca Caraballo in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and later passed to his son Papo Lucca, who became its musical director.
Their sound is classic salsa with a powerful brass section and Papo Lucca's distinctive piano at its core, anchored over the years by singers such as Tito Gómez.
With a recording career stretching across half a century, including a 55th-anniversary album, La Sonora Ponceña ranks among the most enduring and respected bands in salsa.
Hacheros Pa' un Palo
“Hacheros Pa' un Palo” is one of the band's signature numbers, a showcase of the tight ensemble playing and brass punch that define their style.
