banda

Banda is both a subgenre of regional Mexican music and a type of ensemble built on brass and percussion. It dates to the mid-19th century, when community musicians used newly arrived piston brass instruments to imitate military bands, with the first bandas forming in southern and central Mexico.

Here it is represented by institutions like Banda El Recodo and Banda MS, La Arrolladora Banda el Limón, and the late Jenni Rivera.
