Bachata evolved in the Dominican Republic across the 20th century, blending Spanish, Indigenous Taíno and African elements; in its early days it was even called amargue — "bitterness."

In the 1990s its sound modernized, trading nylon-string guitar for electric steel-string and güira, and in the 21st century urban bachata made it one of the most popular styles of Latin music worldwide.
