Reggaeton is the dance music that grew out of Spanish-language reggae in Panama in the late 1980s and took its definitive shape in Puerto Rico, where artists have driven it since the early 1990s.

It evolved from dancehall, with elements of hip hop and Caribbean music; vocals move between rapping and singing, almost always in Spanish, and the culture around it centers on the dance known as perreo. By the 2010s it had spread across Latin America and broken into the global mainstream.
