latin jazz · Puerto Rico
Arturo Sandoval is a Cuban-American jazz trumpeter, pianist, and composer, and one of the great virtuosos of Latin jazz. His dramatic life story has become the stuff of film.
In Cuba he was influenced by jazz greats like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie; after meeting Gillespie in 1977, the trumpeter became his mentor and helped him defect from Cuba.
His music is Latin jazz built on breathtaking trumpet technique, blending bebop fire with Afro-Cuban rhythm; he is also a pianist, timbalero, and composer.
A naturalized U.S. citizen since 1998, Sandoval saw his life dramatized in the 2000 film For Love or Country, starring Andy García, cementing his renown.
