Buena Vista Social Club was a celebrated ensemble of mostly Cuban musicians formed in 1996 to revive the popular Havana sounds of the mid-20th century.
The project was organized by World Circuit's Nick Gold, produced by American guitarist Ry Cooder and directed by Juan de Marcos González. It took its name from a members' club in Havana's Buenavista quarter, a popular 1940s music venue, and gathered a dozen veteran musicians, some long retired.
Their music showcases classic Cuban styles — son, bolero and danzón — performed by seasoned players steeped in those traditions.
By reuniting veteran Cuban musicians, the project brought the island's golden-era styles to a worldwide audience and became a landmark in the global appreciation of Cuban music.
Chan Chan
"Chan Chan" is their signature song, an instantly recognizable son that opened their album and came to symbolize the whole project.
