Los Prisioneros were a Chilean rock band widely regarded as one of the most influential Latin American groups of all time and pioneers of Rock en español.
Formed in San Miguel, Santiago in 1982, they emerged during Chile's dictatorship era and became one of the most socio-politically impactful bands in the country before disbanding in 1992.
Their sound began in British punk rock — the Clash especially — and folded in rockabilly, reggae, ska and later synthpop. They were known for witty, subversive lyrics that criticized the social, economic and educational structures of dictatorship-era Chile and Latin America.
Their music was banned by Chilean mainstream media between 1985 and 1990, yet it spread by word of mouth and homemade cassette tapes. Latin American media and musicians have long credited them as pioneers of the genre.
Tren al Sur
"Tren al Sur" is among their signature songs, a track that captures the band's blend of pointed lyricism and accessible new-wave-rooted sound.
