Alfredo Zitarrosa was a Uruguayan singer-songwriter, poet, and journalist regarded as one of Latin America's most influential singer-songwriters. His name is synonymous with the milonga.
Active from 1965, Zitarrosa pioneered a new path in Uruguayan popular music, merging rural folk traditions with urban tango influences. A committed leftist, he lived in exile between 1976 and 1984.
He based much of his work on the milonga, using traditional trios and quartets of guitars and guitarrón to craft a grave, distinctive sound.
His songs combined social and political themes with reflections on human relationships, securing his place as one of the most influential voices in Latin American song.
Doña Soledad
“Doña Soledad” is one of his signature works, exemplifying the milonga-based style that became inseparable from his name.
