Carlos Gardel was a French-born Argentine singer, composer, and actor, and the single most prominent figure in the history of tango. He remains the most famous tango singer of all time.
Rising to fame from the 1910s, Gardel became one of the most influential interpreters of popular music in the first half of the 20th century, recognized throughout the world.
Described variously as a baritone or tenor for his wide vocal range, he was known for his rich voice and dramatic phrasing, the very template of tango singing.
With his long-time lyricist and collaborator Alfredo Le Pera, Gardel wrote several classic tangos, cementing a legend that still defines the genre worldwide.
Por una Cabeza
"Por una Cabeza" is among his most famous tangos, an elegant, instantly recognizable piece that has long outlived him in film and popular memory.
