Tom Jobim is one of the fathers of bossa nova and among the most celebrated songwriters of the 20th century. A Brazilian composer, pianist, and singer, he gave the world a sound that still feels effortlessly elegant.
Born Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim, he emerged as a composer in the 1950s and became a pioneer of bossa nova in the 1960s, merging samba with cool jazz to create something entirely new.
His music blends the gentle sway of samba with the sophistication of jazz, marked by lush harmonies, understated melodies, and a quiet, intimate warmth across composing, piano, guitar, and voice.
Regarded as a great exponent of Brazilian music, Jobim saw his compositions embraced by singers and instrumentalists around the world from the early 1960s onward, cementing his place among the era's finest songwriters.
Garota de Ipanema
"Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Ipanema") became a global standard and perhaps the most famous bossa nova ever written, the song most associated with his name.
