João Gilberto
bossa nova · Brazil
Vinícius de Moraes, nicknamed "O Poetinha," was a Brazilian poet, diplomat, lyricist and musician whose work was instrumental in the birth of bossa nova.
Active in music from the mid-1950s until 1980, he worked with frequent partners — most famously Antônio Carlos Jobim — while also serving as a career Brazilian diplomat.
His lyrics and compositions helped define bossa nova, pairing poetic Portuguese verse with the genre's gentle, sophisticated melodies.
Through his collaborations he helped introduce bossa nova to the world, and recorded numerous albums with noted artists across his career.
Garota de Ipanema
"Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Ipanema") is his signature song, a bossa nova classic that became one of the most recorded songs in history.
