Chabuca Granda was a Peruvian singer and composer whose Criollo waltzes became cornerstones of her country's songbook. She is one of Peru's most revered artists.
Active from around 1950, Granda created and performed a vast number of Criollo waltzes infused with Afro-Peruvian rhythm.
Her music centers on the Criollo waltz—graceful and lyrical—colored by Afro-Peruvian touches that gave her songs their distinctive lift.
Her work, declared a Cultural Heritage of the Nation, influenced artists like Susana Baca, Eva Ayllón, and Gian Marco; Peru posthumously awarded her the Order of the Sun.
La Flor de la Canela
“La Flor de la Canela” is her most famous composition, a Criollo waltz beloved as an unofficial anthem of old Lima.
