Luiz Gonzaga was a Brazilian singer, songwriter, musician and poet, and one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Brazilian popular music.
Active from 1939 until 1989, he is credited with introducing the rich universe of Northeastern Brazilian musical genres to the whole country, popularizing the baião.
His music is rooted in forró and the Northeastern Brazilian tradition, with the baião at its heart — a sound Antônio Carlos Jobim called revolutionary.
Caetano Veloso called him the first significant cultural event with mass appeal in Brazil; he received the Shell prize for Brazilian Popular Music in 1984 (only the fourth artist so honored), and the Luiz Gonzaga Dam bears his name.
Asa Branca
"Asa Branca" is his signature song, an enduring anthem of Northeastern Brazil that remains inseparable from his legacy.
