Victor Jara was a Chilean singer-songwriter, theater director, poet, and political activist whose music became the conscience of a generation. He stood at the heart of the Nueva Cancion Chilena movement.
Active from around 1960, Jara made his name first in Chilean theater, directing everything from local plays to world classics, before becoming a pivotal figure among the neo-folkloric musicians who founded the Nueva Cancion Chilena.
His art fused folk-rooted song with poetry and conviction, helping spark a wave of new sounds in popular music during the era of President Salvador Allende.
As a leading voice of the Nueva Cancion movement and a committed political activist, Jara left a profound mark on Chilean culture and on protest music far beyond his homeland.
Te Recuerdo Amanda
"Te Recuerdo Amanda" is his most cherished song, a tender, quietly devastating ballad that distills his gift for marrying intimacy with social feeling.
