cumbia · Mexico
Celso Piña was a Mexican accordionist, singer, and composer known as “El Rebelde del acordeón.” He was a pioneer of cumbia rebajada and tropical fusion.
Active from 1980 in Monterrey, Piña became one of the most important figures in the slowed-down cumbia rebajada style before his death in 2019.
His music is cumbia at its core, daringly fused with regional Mexican, sonidera, ska, reggae, rap, and R&B into a genre-crossing sound.
A trailblazer who bridged tropical tradition and urban modernity, Piña earned nicknames like “El Cacique de la Campana” and influenced a generation of Mexican fusion artists.
Cumbia Sobre el Río
“Cumbia Sobre el Río” is his signature song, an enduring anthem of his accordion-driven cumbia fusion.
