Inti-Illimani are a Chilean folk music ensemble whose name means 'Sun of the Golden Eagle' in Aymara, known for blending Latin American roots with a wide musical palette.
Formed in 1967 by university students, they gained popularity in Chile and were touring Europe during the 1973 coup, after which they could not return home as their music was banned under the Pinochet junta.
Their instrumental and vocal music is rooted in Andean and Latin American forms; in European exile it took on a multifarious character, incorporating European baroque and other traditions into a fusion of modern world music.
They became closely tied to Chile's Popular Unity era, and their work carried the spirit of Latin American folk music to international audiences during their years abroad.
El Pueblo Unido Jamás Será Vencido
"El Pueblo Unido Jamás Será Vencido" is among their signature songs, an anthem that became inseparable from the political moment they lived through.
